Replacing plastic kitchen utensils: what to choose instead
A plastic spatula scratches, wears out and ends up in the bin. Wood is the simplest replacement: it lasts for years and can be looked after. Nawara makes kitchen utensils in olive wood, carved by hand and finished with food-grade oil.
Why olive wood
- It is dense. Olive wood is one of the densest fruitwoods: it resists scratches and does not hold odours.
- It is gentle on pans. It does not scrape non-stick coatings.
- It is natural. Finished with food-grade sunflower oil only, no varnish or lacquer.
- It lasts. Looked after properly, a utensil serves for years.
What to replace first
- The spatula, the utensil that wears out fastest: from CHF 10.
- The cooking spoon: from CHF 9.
- The ladle: CHF 18.
- Everything at once: the 5-piece set with its holder, from CHF 37.
How to look after wooden utensils
- Wash by hand and dry straight away.
- Never in the dishwasher.
- Oil from time to time with a food-grade oil.
Where the wood comes from
We use wood from pruned branches and from olive trees at the end of their productive life. No tree is felled to make our pieces. They are designed in Switzerland and carved by hand by artisans in Tunisia.
